Scooter laws

Once the weather gets warm, it seems like more people ditch their cars and hop on Vespas or other motorized scooters. While they are fun and extremely eco-friendly, they are also as dangerous as any motorcycle–prompting most states to enforce scooter laws to keep riders safe.

The scooter laws of New York, California and Florida require:
• Operators must be at least 16 years of age
• Must have a minimum class E license and visible plates/registration tags
• May not be operated in foot or bike paths
• Operator cannot be intoxicated; DUI rules are applicable.

Scooter laws vary state by state, so the best resource for information is by calling the local Department of Motor Vehicles. Even though it’s not required in some states, most DMVs will recommend wearing a helmet because of the inherent dangers that come with riding bikes, motorcycles or scooters.
